With the day off Tuesday, a good chance to catch up on a few assorted nuggets I’ve come up with from the first 5 games of the Marlins’ 2012 season.
Widespread panic ensued after the Marlins managed one run on 7 hits and batted .119 with only 2 extra-base hits (both doubles) as a team in their first 2 games…in 3 games since, however, the Marlins have scored 19 runs on 34 hits, batting .312 with 7 doubles, 2 triples and 6 home runs.
Five games into the season, the Marlins already have a pair of 3-homer games (Saturday in Cincinnati and Monday in Philadelphia)…a season ago, it took the club until May 1 (game 26) to enjoy a pair of games with at least 3 long balls…the Marlins homered 3 or more times in a game 13 times all year in 2011…Monday’s 3-homer game came on a day when neither the regular #4 (Giancarlo Stanton) or #5 (Logan Morrison) hitters were in the lineup.
The Marlins have already stolen 7 bases through 5 games…a season ago, it took the club 14 games to get to 7 steals and 17 games to get to 8.
Omar Infante has slugged 3 home runs in the first 5 games of the season…in 2011, he didn’t hit his 3rd home run until the team’s 110th game on August 2…he went deep 3 times in his first 17 at-bats this year after not hitting his 3rd homer until his 418th at-bat last year, his first season with Miami.
The Marlins put the lead-off man on base in 7 of the 9 innings Monday against the Phillies, and that first man scored in 6 of those innings, all 6 of the club’s runs. Overall this season, the Marlins have put the lead-off man on base in 20 of the 45 innings in which they’ve batted, and he’s come around to score 12 times.
Jose Reyes is the only Marlin who has hit safely in all 5 games this season. If you go back to the end of last season when he was still with the Mets, Reyes is riding a 13-game hitting streak. His career-best is a 20-game with New York in 2005.
One turn through the rotation, the 5 Marlins starters have combined for a 3.90 ERA…more impressively, each worked at least 6 innings in his season debut with Ricky Nolasco going 8 Saturday night against the Reds.
Of the 19 runs the Marlins have surrendered through 5 games, 6 have come in the first inning…Miami pitchers have a 10.80 ERA in the first inning and a 3.05 ERA from the 2nd inning on.
After starters Kyle Lohse of the Cardinals and Johnny Cueto of the Reds held Miami to one run in 14 1/3 innings over the season’s first 2 games, opposing starters Mat Latos, Bronson Arroyo and Cole Hamels have allowed a total of 11 runs in 16 1/3 innings the last 3 games, posting a collective 6.06 ERA.
24 of the 25 players on the Marlins’ Opening Day roster have appeared in at least one game…the only exception: right-handed reliever Chad Gaudin…Steve Cishek has pitched in relief in 4 of the first 5 games, having tossed 4 shutout innings.
The Marlins have played in front of sell-out crowds in 4 of their first 5 games.
